Shifter

Earned wage access for South Africa

Your workers get paid the day they work.

Shifter lets casual and shift workers take the wages they have already earned, straight to their phone. Workers use WhatsApp. You stop paying people one by one.

  • Paid out with PayShap
  • Cash at partner ATMs and shops
  • Money held at a registered bank
An example WhatsApp chat. A worker asks for their balance of R1,100, chooses PayShap, and withdraws R500.

The problem

Paying casual workers should not take all day

Construction crews, domestic staff and temp workers are often paid by the day or the week. For most employers, that still means a lot of work by hand.

Paying one by one

Many employers pay each worker in cash, or with one EFT at a time. With a big team, this takes hours every week.

Workers wait for their money

People who work by the day often need money before payday. When they cannot get it, many borrow at a high cost.

Cash on site is a risk

Cash on a work site is not safe, and it is hard to keep track of who got paid what, and when.

How it works

Four simple steps

You set it up once. After that, your workers look after their own pay.

  1. Step 1

    Add your workers

Add each worker in the dashboard with their phone number and pay rate: by the hour, by the day or by the month.

  2. Step 2

    Workers check in on WhatsApp

At the start of a shift, a worker sends the shift code for the site. At the end, they check out. There is no app to download.

  3. Step 3

Wages add up as they work

Shifter works out what each worker has earned, shift by shift or day by day. Workers can ask for their balance at any time.

  4. Step 4

    Workers take their pay

They send money to their bank with PayShap in seconds, or they get a cash voucher to use at a partner ATM or a shop.

For employers

Less admin. Happier teams.

Shifter does the sums and the payments, so you can get on with the job.

One balance for all wages

Add money to your Shifter balance by EFT with your own reference. We add it to your balance automatically.

Top up by card

Add money by card at any time. Or turn on automatic top-up, so your balance does not run out.

See what is coming

The dashboard shows the wages you will owe in the next days, and when you need to add more money.

Your whole team in one place

Add workers, set pay rates and work days, and see who is on shift right now.

Site managers

Site managers can make shift codes and see who is on site, straight from WhatsApp.

Only earned wages

Workers can only take what they have already earned. It is not a loan, so nobody ends up in debt.

For workers

Simple for everyone on your team

Workers do not need a new app or a bank card. They use the chat app that is already on their phone.

Works on WhatsApp

Nothing to download. If a worker has WhatsApp or Telegram, they can use Shifter.

Their balance, any time

Workers ask the bot and see what they have earned straight away. No waiting, no asking the boss.

Money in seconds

PayShap sends money to the bank account linked to a phone number, usually in a few seconds.

No bank account needed

Workers can take a cash voucher and collect cash at a partner ATM, or at shops like Shoprite and PEP.

Safe and clear

We look after the money properly

Held at a registered bank

All funds are kept in a business account at a registered South African bank, not in an app wallet.

Every rand is recorded

Every deposit, wage and payment goes into a ledger. You can see all of it in your dashboard.

Checked before we pay

For PayShap, the bank confirms the name on the account before any money moves.

ShifterPay

Need to send payments from your own system?

ShifterPay is a simple API for PayShap payments, bank transfers and cash vouchers. You pay from a rand balance you hold with us, and you can test it all in a sandbox first.

Questions we often get

Something else you want to know? Email us at info@shifter.money.

What is earned wage access?
It lets workers take the wages they have already earned before the usual payday. It is their own money. It is not a loan, and there is nothing to pay back.
What do workers need?
A phone with WhatsApp or Telegram. They do not need to download an app or fill in forms.
Do workers need a bank account?
No. A worker without a bank account can take their money as a cash voucher. They collect the cash at a partner ATM, or at shops such as Shoprite, Checkers, Pick n Pay and PEP.
How fast do workers get their money?
A PayShap payment usually arrives in a few seconds. A cash voucher is ready as soon as the worker asks for it.
How do I pay for my workers' wages?
You keep a balance with Shifter. You add money by EFT with your own reference, or by card. When a worker takes their pay, the money comes from your balance.
Where is the money kept?
In a business bank account at a registered South African bank. We record every deposit, wage and payment, and you can see your balance and history in the dashboard.
What does it cost?
It depends on the size of your team. Book a demo and we will give you a price.
